Overview

This project exemplifies how thoughtful design can create lasting opportunities and foster meaningful connections. It began as a brief to design a retirement home in Kerala, driven by the need for a resilient, safe space following the Kerala floods of 2018 and 2019. The goal was to craft a home that could withstand heavy monsoons while doubling as a social retreat for family and friends.

The process was deeply collaborative, with the designer working closely with family members, consultants, and site workers. The COVID-19 lockdown provided a unique opportunity for daily engagement at the construction site, enabling hands-on learning and fostering a strong connection to the project.

What began as a personal endeavor has evolved into a multifunctional space that serves as a homestay on Airbnb and an occasional event venue. Beyond its architectural purpose, the project expanded to include the design of a unique travel experience map, creating an immersive journey through Thrissur. The map guides visitors to explore the city’s rich cultural legacy, historic landmarks, culinary traditions, and the client’s farms. This initiative not only promotes deeper engagement with local heritage but also integrates the family’s agricultural pursuits into the visitor experience, enriching the connection between guests and hosts.

The designer continues to act as the primary liaison, ensuring seamless communication between guests and hosts. This project laid the foundation for a multidisciplinary approach, blending architecture, user experience, and community engagement. It reflects a belief that thoughtful, empathetic design can inspire connections, celebrate cultural heritage, and create new opportunities, underscoring the value of putting heart and purpose into one’s work.
